Datos del 2002 superados, la tenencia ha mejorado un poco:

Sobre lo temprano (31 de agosto) del máximo diario de este año en la extensión de la banquisa antártica, cuenta el NSIDC:

The early maximum appears to be the result of an intense wind pattern in September, spanning nearly half of the continent from the Wilkes Land area to the Weddell Sea, and centered on the Amundsen Sea. Stronger than average low pressure in this area, coupled with high pressure near the Falkland Islands, and near the southern tip of New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean, created two regions of persistent northwesterly winds. Sea ice extent decreased in the areas where the northwesterly winds reached the ice front.

Los reanálisis NCEP/NCAR muestran estas anomalías en la intensidad y dirección del viento durante septiembre 2016, pudiendo apreciarse esas zonas de vientos del NW más intensos de lo normal en colores amarillos y rojos:




Y este es el cambio del 31 de agosto al 30 de septiembre en las imágenes AMSR2 de la Universidad de Bremen, pudiendo observarse la retirada de la banquisa aproximadamente en las zonas afectadas por los intensos vientos del NW (mar de Ross, y a ambos lados de la Península Antártica: mar de Bellingshausen y mar de Weddell):

Antarctic sea ice – frozen ocean water that rings the southernmost continent – has grown over the past few decades but declined sharply in late 2016. By March of 2017 – the end of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer – Antarctic sea ice had reached its lowest area since records began in 1978. The results are published this week in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

In the study, British Antarctic Survey (BAS) scientists puzzled by the sudden ice loss matched satellite images of Antarctica with weather data from the second half of 2016 to figure out what caused so much of the ice to melt. They found that a series of remarkable storms during September, October and November brought warm air and strong winds from the north that melted 75,000 square kilometers (30,000 square miles) of ice per day.

During Austral spring 2016 Antarctic sea ice extent (SIE) decreased at a record rate of 75 × 103 km2 day-1, which was 46% faster than the mean rate and 18% faster than in any previous spring season during the satellite era. The decrease of sea ice area was also exceptional and 28% greater than the mean. Anomalous negative retreat occurred in all sectors of the Antarctic, but was greatest in the Weddell and Ross Seas. Record negative SIE anomalies for the day of year were recorded from 3 November 2016 until 9 April 2017. Rapid ice retreat in the Weddell Sea took place in strong northerly flow after an early maximum ice extent in late August. Rapid ice retreat occurred in November in the Ross Sea when surface pressure was at a record high level, with the Southern Annular Mode at its most negative for that month since 1968.

Se veía venir

Resulta que el enorme cacho hielo desprendido de la Antártida es una birria

Por cierto, esta es la temperatura antártica desde 1979:



Y como podemos ver, el calentamiento en la Península Antártica es verdaderamente acojonante, especialmente desde 1999 



Claro que todo es más comprensible si tenemos en cuenta el achicharrante calentamiento de la Antártida a lo largo de los últimos 2000 años. En realidad, si nos atrevemos a ir allí seguramente podremos preparar el té simplemente poniendo en la taza un sobrecito y un poco de agua directamente recogida del suelo:

Nuevas noticias de Larsen C  desde el Proyecto Midas http://www.projectmidas.org/blog/larsen-c-responds/

Al parecer se ha generado una nueva grieta donde termino la ultima , que genero el A68 , y su movimiento es hacia el norte , dirigiéndose a una zona llamada "Elevación de  Bawden" .

"In a further development, a new rift appears to be extending northwards (towards the top left) and may result in further ice shelf area loss. Although this new rift will probably soon turn towards the shelf edge, there may be a risk that it will continue on to Bawden Ice Rise, a crucial point of stabilisation for Larsen C Ice Shelf."

Esta elevación , como la de Gipps mas al Sur,  son de vital importancia para la estabilidad de toda la plataforma , ya que actúan como "pilares" en donde se sostiene buena parte de su estructura , si por alguna causa la plataforma se separara de alguna de estas dos elevaciones, la estabilidad de toda la plataforma se vería seriamente comprometida.

A este respecto se referia el Glacilogo Eric Rignot :

“We’re not even sure how it’s hanging on there,” he said. “But if you take away Bawden, the whole shelf will feel it.”

                If the shelf front disconnects from the ice rises, a rapid retreat will be triggered.

Habra que estar atentos ..

De momento los de Midas no parecen preocupados , ya que dicen que la grieta se encuentra en una zona de hielo suave que debería de detener su crecimiento o al menos retrasarlo ..
