¿alguna sugerencia?
General circulation model simulations suggest that during the Last Glacial Maximum, the northern circumpolar vortex intensified and enlarged, a glacial anticyclone developed over the Laurentide Ice Sheet, and the position of the jet stream was shifted southward. However, observations directly related to shifts in wind patterns across the North American continent have not yet been reported. We examined tree-ring cellulose from the Holocene and the last glacial period for: (1) covariation between precipitation {delta}18O (and {delta}D) and relative humidity, and (2) variation of cellulose {delta}18O and {delta}D with longitude. Holocene isotopic features are consistent with modern moisture trajectories. The isotopic features during the last glaciation are dissimilar to those in the Holocene, and constitute direct evidence for an expansion of the polar easterlies to latitudes as low as 40°N. This is the first time that moisture transport patterns have been inferred from covariation between isotopic composition in precipitation and relative humidity, a technique that holds much promise for future studies of atmospheric circulation. The Changes in North American atmospheric circulation patterns indicated by wood cellulose (http://geology.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/35/2/163)
The configuration of Alpine accumulation areas during the last glacial maximum (LGM) has been reconstructed using glacial–geological mapping. The results indicate that the LGM ice surface consisted of at least three major ice domes, all located south of the principal weather divide of the Alps. This implies that the buildup of the main Alpine ice cover during oxygen isotope stage (OIS) 2 was related to precipitation by dominant southerly atmospheric circulation, in contrast to today's prevalent westerly airflow. Such a reorganization of the atmospheric circulation is consistent with a southward displacement of the Oceanic Polar Front in the North Atlantic and of the associated storm track to the south of the Alps. These results, combined with additional paleoclimate records from western and southern Europe, allow an interpretation of the asynchronous evolution of the different European ice caps during the last glaciation. δ18O stages (OIS) 4 and 3 were characterized by location of the Polar Front north of 46°N (Gulf of Biscay). This affected prevailing westerly circulation and, thus, ice buildup in western Scandinavia, the Pyrénées, Vosges, and northern Alps. At the LGM, however, the Polar Front lay at not, vert, similar44°N, causing dominating southerly circulation and reduced precipitation in central and northern Europe.Alpine Evidence for Atmospheric Circulation Patterns in Europe during the Last Glacial Maximum (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6WPN-45C0W5H-1&_user=10&_rdoc=1&_fmt=&_orig=search&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000050221&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=2d52dbc58b6cddbbd03293c14e4d1c7d)
U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircons from upper Paleozoic loessite (western United States) provides preliminary data bearing on atmospheric circulation patterns within western equatorial Pangea. Loessite (lithified eolian silt) is increasingly recognized in upper Paleozoic strata of western Pangea. Zircon age spectra of six loessite samples representing four stratigraphic sections ranging from Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) to Early Permian (Wolfcampian) ages vary significantly, reflecting changing provenances attributable to temporal and spatial shifts in winds. Zircons from two Desmoinesian samples (Arizona, Utah) show a dominant mode between 1800-1600 Ma, reflecting the Yavapai/Mazatzal terranes coring the Ancestral Rockies uplifts and suggesting northeasterly winds for both localities. Both samples also contain a secondary cluster of Grenville-age grains (1000-1300 Ma) and grains ranging from 440-370 Ma, reflecting a south-southeasterly source (e.g. Mexico/Texas). Age spectra for the four Wolfcampian samples (New Mexico, Colorado and Utah) differ from one another. The New Mexico loessite contains a large mode at 1700 Ma, which is missing in the Utah sample and minimal in the Colorado samples; this difference may reflect the locations of these samples on opposing sides of the "core" Ancestral Rockies uplifts within a strong westerly wind regime. Further, the age spectra of the two Wolfcampian samples from Colorado section exhibit significant provenance differences, suggesting a temporal shift in wind regimes. The younger sample contains zircon populations that suggest a return of significant north- and southeasterly winds, with less evidence for westerlies. Inferred easterly winds for Middle Pennsylvanian time matches predictions of zonal circulation models, and the presence of both northerly and southerly directions may reflect time-averaged fluctuation of the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ). In contrast, our data indicate that monsoonal circulation and attendant westerly winds were established by earliest Permian time, but evolved during the Wolfcampian. Currently, we are matching the geochronologic data to more traditional geochemical and petrographic data to develop higher-resolution records of Late Paleozoic atmospheric circulation for western Pangea.
Peoria Loess deposited in western Iowa during the last glacial maximum (LGM) shows distinct geochemical and particle-size variations as a function of both depth and distance east of the Missouri River. Geochemical and particle-size data indicate that Peoria Loess in western Iowa probably had two sources: the Missouri River valley, and a source that lay to the west of the Missouri River. Both sources indicate that LGM paleowinds in western Iowa had a strong westerly component, similar to interpretations of previous workers. A compilation of loess studies in Iowa and elsewhere indicates that westerly winds were dominant during loess transport over much of the midcontinent south of the Laurentide ice sheet, which is not in agreement with paleowinds simulated by atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). AGCMs consistently generate a glacial anticyclone with easterly or northeasterly winds over the Laurentide ice sheet and the area to the south of it. Loess deposition in the midcontinent during the LGM may be a function of infrequent northwesterly winds that were unrelated to the presence of the glacial anticyclone.

Our study of geomagnetic field paleoinversions, and their after effects, has lead us to the unambiguous, and straight forth, conclusion that these present processes being observed are following precisely the same scenarios as those of their distant ancestors. And additional signs of the inversion of the magnetic field are becoming more intense in frequency and scale. For example: During the previous 25 million years, the frequency of magnetic inversions was twice in half a million years while the frequency of inversions for the last 1 million years is 8 to 14 inversions [43], or one inversion each 71 to 125 thousand years. What is essential here is that during prior periods of maximum frequency of inversions there has also been a corresponding decrease in the level of oceans world-wide (10 to 150 meters) from contraction caused by the wide development of crustal folding processes. Periods of lessor frequency of geomagnetic field inversions reveals sharp increases of the world ocean level due to the priority of expansion and stretching processes in the crust. [43-44]. Therefore, the level of World's oceans depends on the global characteristic of the contraction and expansion processes in force at the time.
We must emphasize that this documented polar shift acceleration (3 km per year average over 10 years), and its travel along the geo-historic magnetic poles inversion corridor (the corridor having been established by the analysis of more than 400 paleoinversion sites) necessarily leads us to the conclusion that the currently observed polar travel acceleration is not just a shift or digression from the norm, but is in fact an inversion of the magnetic poles; in full process. It is now seen that the acceleration of polar travel may grow to a rate of up to 200 km per year. This means that a polar inversion may happen far more rapidly than is currently supposed by those investigators without a familiarity with the overall polar shift problem.
The current geomagnetic inversion frequency growth phase may not lead to an increase in oceanic volume from polar warming, but rather to a decrease in ocean levels. Frequent inversions mean stretching and expansion, rare inversions mean contraction. Planetary processes, as a rule, occur in complex and dynamic ways which require the combining and joining of all forces and fields in order to adequately understand the entire system. In addition to the consideration of hydrospheric redistribution, there are developing events which also indicate a sudden and sharp breaking of the Earth's meteorological machinery.
The equatorial ring current (ERC) theory suggested that the distribution of global disturbed horizontal geomagnetic field only depends on the cosine of station’s latitude. However, we always observe a larger ΔH at higher latitude stations than lower ones, implying that the ERC could tilt or/and shift with respect to the equatorial plane during intense storms. In this paper, we analyze 11 intense magnetic storms from 2000 to 2004, and introduce two configurational factors to characterize the topology of storm time ring current. The results show that ERC has occasionally deviated off equatorial plane with both tilt angle δt≈13°―25° and latitude shift δs≈0°―21.8°. The ground disturbed field distribution should be improved as ΔHk = ΔHmaxcos(φk-δ ), which agree well with the geomagnetic observations.
The ionospheric magnetic field is generated by electric currents around 110km of altitude. These currents result from the displacement of the conducting atmosphere in the main magnetic field of internal origin. The ionospheric field is coupled with the Sun irradiation, so it is especially prominent on the dayside of the Earth and varies daily and seasonally. The field also varies with solar activity and is strongly influenced by magnetic storms or substorms. At midlatitudes, ionospheric field variations have an order of magnitude of about 50nT at the Earth’s surface, reaching up to several hundreds of nanoteslas during magnetic storms. Until recent years, most geomagnetic models only described the main field. The aim of this thesis is to accurately model the ionospheric magnetic field and its temporal variations at the Earth’s surface and at the altitude of lowEarth orbiting satellites.
Although the main magnetic field constitutes 98% of the total field measurements, the ionospheric field is a significant contribution that can reach several hundreds of nanoteslas. This contribution is not yet well understood : there is variability with days, seasons, solar activity,… and at the moment it is difficult to predict this contribution with accuracy.
Using satellite and observatory data, the aim of this thesis is to create a precise model of the ionospheric magnetic field in order to better understand it. We also want to investigate to what extent observatory data can help achieving a better modelling of the
ionospheric field.
In this poster, we present the selection of the real data which will be used in the inversion, and preliminary tests of the model.
More sophisticated parameterisations and inversion of real data will be presented later.
...Since the particles are coming from the Sun and the direction of the Earth’s field is upward parallel to its rotation axis, this gyration creates an electric current eastward in the equatorial plane as shown in the figureA perspective view of the northern portion of the magnetopause current, as seen from above the …. The field of this current is such that it decreases the Earth’s field outside the boundary and increases it inside. Once the current is fully developed, it occupies a thin sheet everywhere on the dayside of the Earth, outside of which is canceled all the terrestrial field. Inside the sheet the field is twice that of the main field.
..
The Earth’s internal magnetic field has not always been oriented as it is today. The direction of the dipole component reverses, on an average, about every 300,000 to 1,000,000 years. This reversal is very sudden on a geologic timescale, apparently taking about 5,000 years. The time between reversals is highly variable, sometimes occurring in less than 40,000 years and at other times remaining steady for as long as 35,000,000 years. No regularities or periodicities have yet been discovered in the pattern of reversals. A long interval of one polarity may be followed by a short interval of opposite polarity.
Available data suggest that during a reversal the strength of the dipole component shrinks to zero while maintaining its orientation. It then grows again to its former strength but with opposite orientation. During the interval in which there is no dipole component, the non-dipole part of the field appears to persist.

The magnetic fields of Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune are changing. Jupiter's magnetic field has more than doubled and Neptune's magnetic field is increasing. The Russians say that all three of these planets are becoming brighter and their atmospheric qualities are changing, but they do not explain what this means. The Russians also report that Uranus and Neptune appear to have had recent pole shifts.
When the Voyager II space probe flew past Uranus and Neptune, the apparent north and south magnetic poles were sizeably offset from where the rotational pole was in earlier recordings. In one case it was 50 degrees off, and in the other case the difference was around 40 degrees.

ConclusionsULF fluctuations of the geomagnetic field and ionospheric sounding measurements at low latitudes during the first CAWSES campaign (http://edoc.gfz-potsdam.de/gfz/get/9582/6/9f3506d57968c637ac0fc4150140bc8b/angeo-24-1455-2006.pdf)
The first CAWSES campaign has been an effort to operate in a coordinate scheme in the framework of the solar-terrestrial research. Indeed, the joint acquisition and use of data from two or more different instrumentations is not only useful in the whole research field but also represents an added value to the individual data. In this paper we describe the results obtained from the analysis of ULF geomagnetic field variations and ionospheric measurements at low latitude during the campaign, and, in particular, in correspondence to the geomagnetic storm associated with the Earth’s arrival of a coronal mass ejection. The principal results of the present investigation can be summarized as follows:
– The whole period is characterized by a moderate Pc3 wave activity during morning hours; its correspondence with small cone angles is clearly indicative of a penetration of upstream wave turbulence generated in the foreshock region. The strong morning/afternoon asymmetry in the Pc3 wave activity does not seem to be related to the IMF orientation in the ecliptic plane, confirming a previous analysis conducted at geosyncronous orbit by Takahashi et al. (1981). Our results indicate that the mechanisms of upstream wave penetration in the magnetosphere still deserve further investigation by the analysis of a larger number of case studies using azimuthally extended ground magnetometer arrays to separate LT and UT dependences.
– The complex SI waveforms are indicative of a significant contribution of the high-latitude ionospheric currents on low-latitude ground measurements. It reinforces the conclusions drawn by Kikuchi and Araki (1985), Tsunomura (1998), Villante et al. (2005a), who showed that at similar latitudes the SI manifestation cannot be interpreted in terms of the magnetopause current alone.
– After the SI occurrence, the power spectra of the H component reveal clear evidence for spectral enhancements matching the magnetospheric cavity/waveguide mode eigenfrequencies. It is interesting to underline in this sense that, as for the present case, most of the events presented in the scientific literature (e.g. Kepko and Spence, 2003; Villante et al., 2005b) typically occurred after the impact of SW shock waves on the magnetopause. This leads one to speculate that, in general, perturbed magnetospheric conditions might be important for the onset of global oscillations of the Earth’s magnetosphere. Moreover, the results of the present investigation seem to confirm that some “selected” frequency modes might be an inherent property of the SW (Kepko and Spence, 2003), and also suggest noncompressive Alfvenic SW fluctuations as direct drivers of long period geomagnetic field pulsations at “selected” frequencies.
– The FLR remote sensing technique revealed a significant reduction (by a factor of 1.6–2) in the plasmasphere density at L= 1.7–1.8 during the recovery phase of the geomagnetic storm. This decrease is also accompanied by a significant negative ionospheric storm phase and is confirmed by vertical TEC measurements. It confirms similar observations obtained by completely different techniques (Degenhardt et al., 1977). The typical lack of FLR signatures during nighttime did not allow one to monitor the plasmasphere density by this technique during all phases of the geomagnetic storm. A larger, longitudinally extended, network would be necessary to obtain a more complete picture of the plasmaspheric dynamics taking place during such events. On the other hand, each storm event has its own individual manifestation because of the complex nonlinear interactions of the contributing processes and the large variety of the initial and boundary conditions. An appropriate interplay between global-scale modelling studies (such as those dealing with the composition changes (Namgaladze et al., 2000) or with the interaction of disturbance dynamo electric fields (Maruyama et al., 2005)) and coordinated measurements, such as this first CAWSES Space Weather campaign, is important for the understanding of the complex storm events.
AbstractBeryllium concentrations and deposition rates in ODP holes from the north Atlantic (2008) (http://en.scientificcommons.org/41685714)
Increases in the production rate of cosmogenic radionuclides associated with geomagnetic excursions have been used as global tie-points for correlation between records of past climate from marine and terrestrial archives. We have investigated the relative timing of variations in 10Be production rate and the corresponding palaeomagnetic signal during one of the largest Pleistocene excursions, the Iceland Basin (IB) event (ca. 190 kyr), as recorded in two marine sediment cores (ODP Sites 1063 and 983) with high sedimentation rates. Variations in 10Be production rate during the excursion were estimated by use of 230Thxs normalized 10Be deposition rates and authigenic 10Be/9Be. Resulting 10Be production rates are compared with high-resolution records of geomagnetic field behaviour acquired from the same discrete samples. We find no evidence for a significant lock-in depth of the palaeomagnetic signal in these high sedimentation-rate cores. Apparent lock-in depths in other cores may sometimes be the result of lower sample resolution. Our results also indicate that the period of increased 10Be production during the IB excursion lasted longer and, most likely, started earlier than the corresponding palaeomagnetic anomaly, in accordance with previous observations that polarity transitions occur after periods of reduced geomagnetic field intensity prior to the transition. The lack of evidence in this study for a significant palaeomagnetic lock-in depth suggests that there is no systematic offset between the 10Be signal and palaeomagnetic anomalies associated with excursions and reversals, with significance for the global correlation of climate records from different archives.

...North Magnetic Pole Is Shifting Rapidly Toward Russia (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/12/1215_051215_north_pole.html)
Over the past century the pole has moved 685 miles (1,100 kilometers) from Arctic Canada toward Siberia, says Joe Stoner, a paleomagnetist at Oregon State University.
At its current rate the pole could move to Siberia within the next half-century, Stoner said.
"It's moving really fast," he said. "We're seeing something that hasn't happened for at least 500 years."
Stoner presented his team's research at the American Geophysical Union's meeting last week in San Francisco

¿A quién afectó? ¿al sol?
9. saludos
Saludos
Plates vs Plumes: A Geological Controversy
Gillian R. Foulger

The longitudinal-phase-free magnetic field ascribed by Evans to a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave is discussed. Using charge conjugation symmetry, it is proved that this kind of magnetic field is inconsistent with Maxwell equations and with Proca's ones as well.
AbstractThe magnetic fields and rotation generators of free space electromagnetism (http://www.springerlink.com/content/v1053806283kv523/)
The relation is developed between rotation generators of the Lorentz group and the magnetic fields of free-space electromagnetism. Using these classical relations, it is shown that in the quantum field theory there exists a longitudinal photomagneton, a quantized magnetic flux density operator which is directly proportional to the photon spin angular momentum. Commutation relations are given in the quantum field between the longitudinal photomagneton and the usual transverse magnetic components of quantized electromagnetism. The longitudinal component is phase free, but the transverse components are phase dependent. All three components can magnetize material in general, but only the transverse components contribute to Planck's law. The photon therefore has three, not two, relativistically invariant degrees of polarization, an axial, longitudinal, polarization, and the usual right and left circular transverse polarizations. Since the longitudinal polarization is axial, it is a phase- free magnetic field.
