My apologies for not informing you sooner. On Friday May 4, SOHO went into ESR (Emergency Sun Reacquisition) mode. It looks like it was an anomaly in the "Coarse Sun Pointing Attitude Anomaly Detector", which is a very simple sensor that looksout for SOHO not pointing at the Sun, and triggers events that "safe" the spacecraftin that event. I think we've had this detector go off unexpectedly a few times over thepast few years. Anyway, the good news is SOHO seems to be fine, and the recovery isunderway. We don't have very good DSN contact this week so it is going to be slowerthan usual. Hopefully we should have LASCO back within a few days though.
STRONG SOLAR FLARE ALERT:A strong solar flare reaching M5.7 took place at 04:18 UTC Thursday morning. The flare was centered around Sunspot 1476. Stay Tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest information.
CHANCE OF FLARES, EARTH-DIRECTED: NOAA forecasters estimate a 75% chance of M-class solar flares and a 20% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours. Any eruptions are likely to be geoeffective because the source, sunspot AR1476, is directly facing our planet. Yesterday, May 10th, amateur astronomer David Maidment of Sohar, Oman caught the active region in mid-flare during a strong M5-class eruption: Foto M5
As you saw, we got some LASCO data last night. Unfortunately yet another ESR was triggered at 20:34UT yesterday. They have recovered from that one and there's a chance that we could start getting data again tonight. However, it is a significant concern that the CSPAADreturned yet another bad reading...I'll keep you updated as I hear things.
