Unconfirmed eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano

During all last week (Week 33) there has been a minor earthquake swarm in Bárðarbunga volcano. No other activity followed this minor earthquake activity during the week until last night (16-August-2014). During the night (around 02:20 UTC) a harmonic tremor started to appear on SIL stations around Bárðarbunga volcano. Following the appearance of the harmonic tremor earthquake activity started around 03:30 UTC. Largest earthquakes in this swarm have magnitude around 3,0 so far. Depth is around 5 to 10 km. During the night the earthquake swarm moved around in the volcano and is now more east then it first started. According to Rúv news the glacier around this part of Vatnajökull glacier is around 700 meters thick, so it going to take a major eruption to break the ice. This however also means that when a glacier flood starts in this area there is a high risk that is going to be large.


Currently the activity in Bárðabunga volcano is not stable, it does fluctuate a little. Besides this minor fluctuation it seems stable. Based on harmonic tremor signal and its range this does not appear to be a large eruption so far. That might change without warning. I do however expect larger earthquakes before any major volcano eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano. What seems to have happened is that a dike intrusion got to the surface and started this eruption, even if it is just small one at current time.

I am going to post update soon as more information gets available. This situation is going to change quickly and without much warning.

Tremor:

Nivel amarillo de alerta volcánica ,segun este geofísico entrevistado por el diario islandes Mbl.is ,dice que si aumenta la intensidad de los seismos a 4/4'5 grados,podrian darse una erupción inminente,de momento profundidades entre 5/10kms,veremos si el magma encuentra salida y si observan inundsciones en el glaciar,700 metros de hielo encima de ese monstruo de dimensiones considerables,podria erupcionar de forma violenta como pareció hacerlo en 1477 segun su historia eruptiva,con un VEI de 6,

el mismo q le asignaron al Pinatubo en la erupción de Junio del 1991.

Esta zona cualquier día nos da una "alegría" tanto el Bárðarbunga, el Katla o la misma fisura del Laki, cualquier día se reaniman, sólo es cuestión de tiempo, enjambres de terremotos ha estado habiendo muchos, falta que aparezca el definitivo.

Seismic activity in Bárðarbunga volcano has increased. A seismic swarm has been ongoing since 03AM this morning, and near continuous earthquakes have been occurring since then. The depths of earthquakes in the present swarm are in the upper crust and their magnitudes are mainly around 1.5; a few earthquakes are of magnitude greater than ML3.

Long-term seismic and GPS data indicate that there is increased unrest in the northwestern region of Vatnajökull glacier, where Bárðarbunga is located:

Over the last seven years seismic activity has been gradually increasing in Bárðarbunga and the fissure swarm north of the volcano. This activity dropped down at the Grímsvötn eruption in May 2011, but soon after, the activity started to gradually increase again and has now reached similar level of activity to that just before the Grímsvötn eruption. Earlier this year, in the middle of May 2014, there was a small swarm of over 200 events and now the present swarm has already generated at least 300 earthquakes.

Since early June 2014, displacements at GPS stations around Vatnajökull (Hamarinn, Grímsfjall, Vonarskarð and Dyngjuháls) show an increased upward movement and away from Bárðarbunga.

Together, these two systems indicate magma movements in Bárðarbunga. Due to increased seismicity IMO has decided to turn volcano Barðarbunga status to yellow. At 23:00 on August 16, there is no unequivocal indication that magma has reached the surface.

Seismic activity at Bárðarbunga persists

The intense seismic activity that started on 16 of August at Bárðarbunga persists. Very strong indications of ongoing magma movement, in connection with dyke intrusion, is corroborated by GPS measurements. There are currently two swarms: one to the E of Bárðarbunga caldera and one at the edge of Dyngjujökull just E of Kistufell. At 2.37 am on the 18th a strong earthquake (M4) was located in the Kistufell swarm.

This is the strongest earthquake measured in the region since 1996. As evidence of magma movement shallower than 10 km implies increased potential of a volcanic eruption, the Bárðarbunga aviation color code has been changed to orange. Presently there are no signs of eruption, but it cannot be excluded that the current activity will result in an explosive subglacial eruption, leading to an outburst flood (jökulhlaup) and ash emission. The situation is monitored closely.

Los sensores gps estan sufriendo cambios que hacen pensar que el magma quisiera salir al exterior,esto se empieza a poner interesante,pero no creo que haya una erupción tipo 1477 cuando la caldera dicen que al quedar tocada,las posteriores erupciones han sido benignas con la mayoria de VEI=2,pero las dimensiones del sistema volcánico de este monstruo el mas grande de Islandia,dan respeto.

"Defensa Civil se reunió con científicos Oficina Meteorológica y el Instituto de Ciencias de la Tierra de la Universidad de Islandia situación hoy. La Oficina Meteorológica dice que j arðskjálftavirknin que comenzó en Bárðarbunga 16 de agosto continuará. Seguimiento de localización GPS proporciona una fuerte evidencia de movimiento de magma. En el caso de un enjambre terremoto animaciones de movimiento al este de Bárðarbunga cartón y los Dyngjujökuls borde justo al este de Kistufell."

Estaremos atentos, que hace 600 años fuese un VEI 6, da respeto, porque geológicamente fue hace nada.
