Darwin Regional Forecasting Centre
UPDATED Tropical Cyclone 3 day Outlook for Northern Region, including the Gulf
of Carpentaria
Issued by the BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY, DARWIN
at 2:25 pm CST Tuesday 20 December 2011
Valid until the end of Friday.
Existing Cyclones in the Northern Region and Gulf of Carpentaria:
Nil.
Potential Cyclones:
A monsoon trough near the north coast of the Top End is moving north into the
Arafura Sea. A low pressure system is expected to develop in the trough within
the next 12 to 24 hours and may intensify further into a tropical cyclone on
Friday.
Likelihood of a tropical cyclone being in the Northern region on:
Wednesday: Low.
Thursday: Moderate.
Friday: High.
NOTE: The likelihood is an estimate of the chance of each system being a
tropical cyclone in the Region for each day...
Very low: less than 5%, Low: 5% to 20%, Moderate: 20% to 50%, High: Over 50%.
The area of coverage for this outlook is the Ocean area south of 9S, between
125E and 142E, including the Gulf of Carpentaria, but excluding the area around
Timor [northwest of 11S 125E, 11S 128E, 9S 128E].

Vuelta a reactivarse.

THE AREA OF CONVECTION PREVIOUSLY LOCATED NEAR 11.5S
134.0E, IS NOW LOCATED NEAR 10.1S 132.5E, APPROXIMATELY 170 NM
NORTHEAST OF DARWIN, AUSTRALIA. ANIMATED INFRARED SATELLITE IMAGERY
INDICATES CONVECTION CONSOLIDATING AROUND A LOW-LEVEL CIRCULATION
CENTER (LLCC) THAT HAS BEEN EMBEDDED IN THE MONSOON TROUGH OVER THE
ARAFURA SEA. THE 211200Z PGTW UPPER-LEVEL STREAMLINE ANALYSIS SHOWS
A POINT SOURCE OF DIFFLUENCE DIRECTLY OVER THE LLCC. THE
ENVIRONMENT IS HIGHLY FAVORABLE FOR SUSTAINED DEVELOPMENT, WITH LOW
VERTICAL WIND SHEAR, SUBSTANTIAL DEEP MOISTURE IN THE COLUMN, AND
SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES IN EXCESS OF 30 DEGREES CELSIUS. MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED SURFACE WINDS ARE ESTIMATED AT 15 TO 20 KNOTS. MINIMUM
SEA LEVEL PRESSURE IS ESTIMATED TO BE NEAR 1004 MB. DUE TO THE
HIGHLY FAVORABLE UPPER- AND LOWER-LEVEL ENVIRONMENTS, THE POTENTIAL
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SIGNIFICANT TROPICAL CYCLONE WITHIN THE
NEXT 24 HOURS IS UPGRADED TO MEDIUM.

REMARKS:
Darwin radar indicates a mid level centre north of the Tiwi Islands, whilst
surface data indicates a weak surface low in the vicinity of Cape Don. The
advised location is an intermediate solution - assuming that the mid level
rotation descends to the surface.
The system has consolidated convection near the mid level centre level centre,
and there are signs that an upper high is forming. A 30 knot easterly surge
propogated to the south overnight, and appears to have provided impetus. The
monsoon flow to the NW is also beginning to wrap into the circulation.
Model guidance continues to be varied. GFS initial positions are all too far to
the east and the subsequent rapid translation to the SE is a consequence of
this. Latest UKMET and ACCESS-T have quite reasonable solutions, in that the
analyses and 6 hour recent positions are in agreement with observations.
A case can be made for DT of 2.0 - however surface observations continue to
suggest the circulation- at least on the southern side, is quite weak at 10 to
15 knots. Although the presentation looks quite impressive at present it is
likely that the diurnal progression will see the system reach TC intensity in 12
to 36 hours if it remains over water.
