EDMONTON - Edmonton awoke to a frigid -29 C Saturday morning, but with no windchill.
Environment Canada expects temperatures to reach a high of -23 C before dropping to a ghastly -34 C Saturday night. Friday's high was only -24 C with a windchill of -37.
The seasonal high for this time of year is -2 C.
But Brian Proctor, a warning preparedness meteorologist at Environment Canada, says relief is in sight.
“We just have to get through the next three to four days, then things are going to be much better after that,” Proctor said on Friday.
A “very significant” Arctic air mass is plunging into Alberta, bringing a surge of cold air.
“The one good thing is it seems to be moving fairly quickly,” Proctor said. “It’s going to be very, very cool for the next 72 hours before we start to warm up Sunday afternoon.”
Forecasts are calling for a high of -21 C Sunday, -18 C Monday and -15 C.
A wind chill warning has been issued for much of eastern Alberta, including Bonnyville, St. Paul, Cold Lake, Lac La Biche, Fort Chipewyan, Fort McMurray, Fort McKay, Lloydminster, Wainwright and Vermilion.
“You can see frostbite in five to ten minutes in this weather, so people really need to dress appropriately. Make sure exposed skin is covered and if you can avoid having to be outside for any extended period of time, do so,” Proctor said.
