A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has occurred in the Bárðarbunga caldera at 20.39 GMT Sunday. The Icelandic Met Office estimates the magnitude at about 5 and the European EMSC network has confirmed it at 4,9.
The seismic crisis in Bárðarbunga and Dyngjujökull has continued with 1.200 observed earthquakes from midnight until 19.00 GMT Sunday. Eight of them are a magnitude 4 or stronger earthquake. The northernmost tip of the seismic activity is now about four kilometers north of the glacier. There are still no signs of volcanic activity.
Páll Einarsson, professor of geophysics at the Univerity of Icelands, says that the development of the seismic activiy in Bárðarbunga and Dyngjujökull, together with the dike intrusion in the Dyngjujökull area, gives scientists pause to reevaluate their ideas about the Bárðarbunga area and it's seismic and volcanic make up. Einarsson says that the dike intrusion may be an indicator that the Bárðarbunga volcanic system may reach further east than previously thought. The fact that the dike intrusion has now reached beyond the glacier might also cause a volcanic eruption to be quite different from what could have been expected otherwise.
