CitarMajor winter storm approaching NM
Updated: 11/22/2013 5:06 PM | Created: 11/22/2013 8:15 AM
By: Eddie Garcia, KOB Pinpoint 4 Weather

Friday afternoon looks promising for more wet weather and snow across northern and western New Mexico. Albuquerque is under a winter weather advisory until 5 p.m.

View: Interactive Doppler Radar

Several inches of snow fell in northern New Mexico overnight into this morning, including 8 inches in Cuba, 6 inches in Eagle Nest and three inches in Las Vegas and Los Alamos.

But the real action begins at 2 p.m., when widespread snow and freezing rain is expected to fall across the eastern sections of the state into the evening. This will create difficult travel conditions across I-40.

On Saturday, a second wave of moisture is expected to hit the state with a rain and snow mix starting around 6 p.m. These winter conditions will hang on into Tuesday.

CitarWinter blows in with early snowfalls
Parts of Yorkshire awoke to a dusting of snow yesterday and icy blasts and snow showers are on their way to many parts of the country this weekend.

Strong winds with gusts of 70mph will batter northern parts of England and higher ground in Scotland could be blanketed in up to 5cm (2in) of snow.

Motorists are being warned that snow and rain overnight may turn to ice on roads as clear conditions bring freezing temperatures.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for most of Scotland and northern England for wind and ice.

It said: "The north or northwesterly winds will increase during the early hours of Wednesday, with gusts perhaps reaching 60-70 mph in places.

"The public should be aware that the winds are likely to be strong enough to cause some local disruption to travel and possibly some minor damage to buildings and trees."

Alexi Boothman, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said temperatures were markedly lower than the average for this time of year.

Maximum temperatures in England and Wales were around 6C (42.8F) or 7C (44.6F) on Tuesday, below the average of 10C (50F) or 11C (51.8F) .

Large parts of England will see temperatures reached minus 3C (26.6F) or minus 4C (24.8F) last night, caused by cold winds from the North.

The A4212 was partly blocked between Bala and Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd after four vehicles were abandoned in places.

Motorists in Denbighshire and Conwy reported snow lying on the road and hazardous conditions on the A5 between Corwen and Pentrefoelas.

In Rhondda Cynon Taf, the Rhigos mountain road was closed for a while between Hirwaun and Treherbert.

South Wales Police said there had been a number of accidents during the morning rush hour.

CitarTemps drop as snow falls on the area

Published 10:26am Friday, November 22, 2013

An Arctic air mass pushed across Minnesota overnight, bringing freezing temperatures to Albert Lea and Austin.

Albert Leans awoke to snow gracing the ground this morning, though not enough to completely cover it up. Streets were white and slippery. Plows cleared arterial streets before the morning commute.

The automated weather observer at the Albert Lea Municipal Airport reports that light snow fell from about 9 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m.

The National Weather Service says the Arctic air mass is bringing the coldest weather so far this season to the central and eastern United States. It is expected to last through the weekend, dropping temperatures to the single digits and teens.

The low tonight in Albert Lea is forecast at 8 degrees and on Saturday night at 1 degree, the weather service says. The outdoors will be warmer Monday, as the mercury is expected to reach 34 degrees.

The cold weather comes as people prepare to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

CitarSnow falls on frigid Metro; High today of 24

Posted on: 7:18 am, November 21, 2013, by Jennifer Broome, updated on: 07:20am, November 21, 2013

DENVER — Some light snow fell on the Metro area early Thursday morning, but the real weather story for today will be the cold. Denver's high for today is just 24.

Winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon for Denver and along I-25.

The eastern plains are also under a winter weather advisory until 4 p.m.  The mountains along and south of I-70 are under winter storm warning through Friday for totals of 6 to 12 inches of snow possible.

In the Denver Metro area we've seen snow accumulations of a quarter- to a half-inch.  Snow will taper off late in the morning then pick up again late afternoon through evening.  Lingering snow showers will be possible mainly south of Denver tomorrow.

A total of about 1 to 2 inches is still expected in Denver and northern suburbs with 2 to 4 inch totals.  A few light snow showers are possible in the Foothills and Palmer Divide as the snow continues for the southern mountains tomorrow.

Highs will be near 32 Friday and we should get above freezing Saturday with highs near 40.  Temperatures will climb into the low 50s early next week.

CitarAs snow falls in Central New York, car accidents reported 'all over the place;' 6 to 10 inches predicted locally

on November 23, 2013 at 6:00 PM, updated November 23, 2013 at 6:37 PM

As of 6 p.m. Saturday --

The combination of the year's first major snowfall and the high frequency of calls on Saturday evenings has led to dozens of reported car accidents in Central New York, according to emergency responders.

"It's going on all over the place," said Trooper Christina Tucker, who works in the state police headquarters for the region that covers most local counties. "There are a lot of accidents out there."

Six to 10 inches of snow are predicted locally.

About a dozen car accidents have been reported in both Madison County and Oswego County, according to the 911 dispatch centers in those counties. Neither reported any serious injuries in the accidents. Additionally, three accidents have been reported in Cayuga County.

In Onondaga County, responders have been called to at least a dozen accidents. A crash on I-481 north in DeWitt closed the right lane of traffic on the road around 5:30 p.m.; Department of Transportation cameras showed traffic on the road at a standstill.

No power outages have been reported in Cayuga, Onondaga or Madison counties.

A severe weather alert was issued by state authorities for Onondaga, Madison, Cortland and Chenango counties lasting from 7 p.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday. The lake effect will bring six to 10 inches of snow and wind of up to 35 mph, the state alert said.

"Tell people to stay home if they can," Tucker said.

CitarNew snow falls in NE China

Xinhua | 2013-11-25 13:04:56
By Agencies
While smog still causes traffic problems in northeast China, more heavy snow hit the area on Sunday, according to local meteorological authorities.

As of 8:30 a.m., seven highways in Heilongjiang Province were closed, and three flights had been delayed.

Snowfall is expected to exceed 10 mm in the provincial capital Harbin and cities of Mudanjiang, Qitaihe and Jixi in the next six hours, the provincial meteorological observatory said.

Cars will be temporarily restricted based on the odd and even number rule on Monday in Harbin and subway line one will extend operations by 30 minutes on Monday evening.

In neighboring Jilin Province, the meteorological office issued an orange blizzard alert at 4:43 a.m. on Monday. Some parts of the province may suffer snowfalls of more 20 mm in the next 24 hours.

China's meteorological alerts are categorized as blue, yellow, orange and red as the severity of disasters ascends.
