JOB OPPORTUNITIES;
POST DOCT AT SOCIB and/or IMEDEA/TMOOS, Spain, starting during 2011

Date: January 22, 2011
We look for highly motivated postdocts with excellent background to work in a scientific and operational environment at SOCIB, the Balearic Islands Coastal Observing System (a large scale infrastructure recently established in the Balearic Islands) and/or at the Department of Marine Technologies, Operational Oceanography and Sustainability (TMOOS) from IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) and from which SOCIB evolved. Specific needs:

1) HF Radar SOCIB facility implementation, in line with the Implementation Plan of SOCIB available at www.socib.eu and also in line with TMOOS Strategic Plan 2010-2013 also available on the TMOOS website. The HF radar facility in the Ibiza channel will be installed in May 2011 and will become operational before September 2011. We look for a well-trained and strongly motivated postdoctoral fellow, with HF radar processing experience and interested in the development of HF radar products for operational oceanography in strong collaboration with other observational facilities at SOCIB (an instrumented buoy will be for example available in the Ibiza channel also during 2011 and onwards), the modeling facility (ROMS, WRF, SWAN) and the Data Center from SOCIB. A strong capacity for team work is required.

2) Coupled physical-biological modeling: in line with SOCIB Implementation Plan and also in line with TMOOS Strategic Plan 2010-2013, we look for a well-trained and strongly motivated postdoctoral fellow, with experience in process oriented physical-biological modeling (ROMS/NPZD type) and interested in the implementation of bio-physical models to understand and establish the ecosystem response to the physical variability in the western Mediterranean. Strong emphasis on process studies (mesoscale and submesoscale contributions, blocking effects, etc) will lead the advancement towards more operational applications in line for example with the SOCIB Bluefin tuna targeted project. A strong capacity for collaboration with leading bio-physical experts and team work is required.

3) Operational Oceanography: in line with SOCIB Implementation Plan and previous TMOOS experiences and also in line with TMOOS Strategic Plan 2010-2013, we look for a physicist or engineer with strong numerical background and interested in the upgrade of existing operational system, data assimilation and validation using the new SOCIB facilities (as detailed in the Implementation Plan, HF Radar, buoys, ARGO and drifters, satellite, etc.). A strong capacity for team work is required.

4) Physical Oceanography: open call for outstanding postdoctoral fellows to develop observational, numerical or observational (gliders, satellite, etc.) topics in line with TMOOS objectives as described in TMOOS 2010-2013 Strategic Plan (http://imedea.uib-csic.es/tmoos)

Salary: depending on previous experience there are 2 levels of access: (a) the first one for postdocts with usually 2 to 4 years of scientific experience after PhD; JAE DOC (CSIC, 3 years contract, salary of 27.540,24 Euros/year)/Juan de la Cierva Fellow (3 years contract, salary of 24.000 Euros/year) and the second (b) for 3-5 years usually after Ph.D, with already solid scientific production in peer review journals; Ramón y Cajal Fellow (5 years contract, salary of 31.600 Euros/year).

Selection: very competitive, based on peer review publications mostly.
Starting: approximately from June 2011 to October/November 2011.

Absolute deadline for applications:
- Ramón y Cajal, until February 10, 2011
- Juan de la Cierva, until February 17, 2011
- JAE Doc CSIC at TMOOS/IMEDEA, until February 8, 2011

Interested candidates submit CV and a letter of motivation in less than one page, together with contact of 2 potential references before January 29 to [email protected], and [email protected]
