Record Cold -45.4, Glattalp Switzerland, for discussion
The Glattalp in Switzerland is due to occurrence of so-called cold air lakes - where temperatures can drop extremely deep. The last few days it became steadily colder last night to reach a record: minus 45.4 degrees! Last night the temperature had already dropped to -37 degrees.
For comparison, the cold record that is widely recognized among the other weather stations: in 1987 - 41.8 degrees from La Brévine there because according to the standards of the world meteorological organization was measured. Jörg Kachelmann from Meteo Media announces today that "the temperature measured at the Glattalpmeer is the lowest since the beginning of the measurements of the station and meet the demands of the world meteorological organization.
Temperature sensors are exactly two meters above the snow and that is in accordance with the regulations. The station of Schwyz Elektrizitätswerk came with - 45.9 degrees. But they do not meet the standards because they are too close to measure the snow. Jörg Kachelmann: "It was only a matter of time. It was to develop an extreme cold, the perfect night. For the Bise (*) should cease, and the clouds were at the same time disappeared. This was also the case last night.
Last night also showed the lowest value measured for this year in residential areas see: -35.1 degrees were measured in Samedan (GR). It was almost as cold as in Samedan (GR) on Alp Buffalora the Ofen pass (GR) with - 31.8 degrees. In La Brévine in the Neuchâtel Jura, called the Siberia of Switzerland, came to - 27.6 degrees.
Certify stations?
At the weekend, it was the record low value of -37 a night before a controversy between the meteorological services. Some criticism was that it was questionable to measure with extreme conditions such as Glattalp in uninhabited places. Zierl Barbel, a spokeswoman for Meteo Swiss says: "We do not doubt the record by Mr Kachelmann measured. However, we can not explain the measured temperatures, because this station is not part of our network."
The record of La Brévine wortdt held as "official record" since 1987, because this was the lowest value measured through the monitoring network of the state monitoring network from Meteo Swiss. Zierl: "We're not saying this is the coldest place in Switzerland has been."
Again and again there are discussions about the record levels under the weather services, as mutually cast doubt on the WMO standards are maintained. However there are now efforts underway to eliminate this, these issues. Reliable data will be collected from all metering services as from Meteo Swiss now. Bärbel Zierl says: "We now discuss whether we can certify those stations, which proved to WMO standards."
