Winter 2004/05 - cold with snow
TheWeatherOutlook winter forecast has now been published and it suggests a cold spell during the second half of December setting the theme for colder conditions during January and February with notable cold spells in both months leading to a cold winter overall. We expect more snow and longer cold spells than in recent UK winters.
There is a high likelihood of widespread and heavy snow during January and February with a 50% probability of blizzards bringing the most significant snowfall to south eastern areas since January 1987. High pressure will often be in control of the weather leading to sharp or even severe frosts at times with a high possibility of some days where the temperature remains below freezing, even in south eastern areas.
According to Brian Gaze, TheWeatherOutlook's senior forecaster, "Recent weather patterns suggest an increased possibility of freezing cold air from Russia pushing right across west Europe and the UK during January. This is how the exceptionally cold winters of 1947 and 1963 occurred, as well as some of the more recent cold spells which were experienced during the 1980s. During the 1990s this type of weather pattern became extremely rare, resulting in most of the UK having a series of mild winters. Our expectation is the coming winter will be similar to those of the mid-1980s when even in southern areas moderate or heavy snowfall was not so unusual."
