Simultaneous estimation of global present-day water transport and glacial isostatic adjustment
According to our estimates, mass losses between 2002 and 2008 in Greenland, Alaska/Yukon and West Antarctica are 104±23, 101±23 and 64±32 Gt yr−1, respectively. Our estimates of glacial isostatic adjustment indicate a large geocentre velocity of −0.72±0.06 mm yr−1 in the polar direction. We conclude that a significant revision of the present estimates of glacial isostatic adjustments and land–ocean water exchange is required.

Sea-level rise: Ice-sheet uncertainty
for the period spanning April 2002 to December 2008, Wu and colleagues find an average annual ice-mass change of −104 ± 23 Gt yr−1 for Greenland and −64 ± 32 Gt yr−1 for West Antarctica. These findings confirm the ongoing shrinkage of the polar ice sheets. However, and most importantly, the newly estimated ice-sheet mass losses represent less than half of other recent GRACE-based estimates2, 3 for the same time interval: −230 ± 33 Gt yr−1 for Greenland2 and −132 ± 26 Gt yr−1 for West Antarctica3 (Fig. 1). It is noteworthy that, unlike the two quoted studies, the results from Wu and colleagues are not corrected for the atmospheric mass contribution, but this correction is small, within ± 5 Gt yr−1, over Greenland and West Antarctica.
